Oscars 2010: Best and Worst Dressed

As everyone who would read this blog knows, the Oscars were this weekend. Every year the celebs really have to pull out the big guns for the Oscars as it is the event of the year for all those in the movie business. It's the Superbowl of celebrity, and this year's fashion was no exception. We saw daring statements, and frightening displays. We saw gorgeous gowns, and maybe a few things we weren't sure of what we were looking at. Either way, this year brought it, and there are a few looks that definitely deserve some explanation, whether they were amazing or confusing.

I've posted my thoughts about each dress from the red carpet in my facebook album, but here I have further broken down my top 5 favorite dresses and rated them from awesome to most awesome. Same with the bad. Scary to most terrifying! Enjoy.

Top 5 Worst Dressed

#5. Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture
This is the 2nd time this season that Diane has done something that made my head cock to the side like a confused puppy. Unfortunately she's a beautiful lady who has reduced herself to a ruffled, slightly wrinkled-up chicken. This is the consequence of taking a risk; if done incorrectly, you will be ripped to shreds for it. I can see that maybe the color of the dress with the black straps could have looked great together in theory, but anything that makes your torso look like a big bag covered in feathers is not going to work, regardless of theory. It's got to work in execution, sorry, bb.

#4. Miley Cyus in Jenny Packham
Like I said before, she looks over-cooked, over-made-up, and her dress is overly-tight. It pulls in at an awkward space, making her torso look really weird and short, and then cups here breasts in a way that makes them look small. Then, because of how tight the top of her dress is, her hips jut out with the bottom of the dress and look wider than they are. Make-up is TOO dark around the eyes! She looks like a 40 year old woman. And her posture is terrible... but probably because her dress is so tight she can't breathe. And my friend Emily made a good point about her posture: if she were to stand up straight, it's possible her boobs would come out of her dress.

Sadly, I think the look could have been really pretty if all these things hadn't all happened at once. The color is good. The bottom of the dress is elegant. But with the fake tan, bad posture, and tight top, it all just looks trashy. Not to mention that her talking about how her mother and her went together to get a tramp stamp in an interview didn't help deter the association to trash in my head.

#3. Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive
I wanted to put her at #1 just because she annoys me, but she truly belongs here. I don't understand E!'s Fashion Police because they had her as a best dress nominee, which is just BEYOND me. Her hair is teased and frizzed and looks like it has the texture of an 80 year old woman. The dress is big blob of fabric in the shape of a wave or flower that has just given up and is now sad and defeated. The texture looks like bubble wrap. So J-Lo, how about next time you choose to wear a giant scoop of ice cream on your hip, you make sure that you smooth your frizzy hair down, too. That might make the look come together a little better. Next time.

#2. Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Haute Couture
This was THE most confusing dress on the carpet. Starts out with the top being encrusted with rhine-stones, then goes down to a lavender torso which is basically the most normal part of the dress... albeit a terrible fabric, then ends with huge scrunchy balls of what looks like cheap tissue paper party lanterns made of cruelly slaughtered Jim Henson muppet pelts. It's not flattering, it distracts from how gorgeous she is, and... I'm still confused. Down with muppet cruelty!

#1. Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture
Now, Charlize should know BETTER than this. I mean she is a red carpet veteran at this point, and the fact is, the obvious mistake here is TEXTBOOK! Obviously don't draw attention away from your beautiful face by making people wonder about what the heck you were thinking by placing giant rose pasties on the top of your dress. Such a bad call. There is a difference in taking a risk and just making a bad judgement call, and this is a bad move! FAIL.

Top 5 Best Dressed

#5. Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab
The print of this dress was just so unique and elegant. The shape was flattering and made Rachel look very graceful, the way it flowed down the back behind her as she walked. The rousing criss-cross at the top was a nice touch as well and brought all the colors together beautifully. Just beautiful.

#4. Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab
Like I said before, I feel like Anna is my little champion! I just love seeing her out there on the Oscar red carpet. I am so proud of her! And this look is just gorgeous, in my opinion. I think the color of the dress was great with her skin color and hair color. The floral detail at the top is elegant along with the off-the-should sleeves. The opening at the bottom is pretty without being too much leg. The shoes are a great shade for the look. Her make up is done well. To me, she looked stunning!

#3. Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten
Again, print was a big deal this year, and I loved this one on Maggie. This print was playful and bold, but still fancy enough for the Oscars. It's a flattering fit, the colors go well with her skin tone, and her make-up is gorgeous! I also really love her hair. It's a huge step-up from her Globe hair and flatters her facial shape. The lip color, lastly, is perfection. Overall, beautiful!

#2. Elizabeth Banks in Versace
This girl was one of my favorites! She not only rocked the look, but she wore it with an attitude! Awesome ruffles, great train, simplistic with jewelry, and her make-up was perfect. The detail at the top of the dress across the bust and down her torso makes her curves really stand out. I especially loved the silver head band she wore in her hair. Just breathtaking!

#1. Sandra Bullock in Marchesa
Looking like a golden, statue-esque goddess herself, Sandra Bullock was certainly dressed to win this award that night. The color was beautiful and complimented her skin tone perfectly. Her hair color was divine! A beautiful chocolate brown that fell down smoothly over her shoulder. Her make up was gorgeous, great bright lip color for a dramatic look. Simple yet perfect jewelry choice. Way to go Sandy B, and congratulations!

  1. I agree with all the points made here. Sandra looked incredible, flawless even. I LOVED her style. I really wish that Miley hadn't been stuffed into that dress because, I think, the premise of the dress would have been really pretty. Excellent breakdown as usual!

  2. Miley is such a dumbass, I can't even handle it. And personally, your number two would be number one on my list because... WHAT. IS. THAT. WHAT IS THAT.
