Discuss It: Dumbledore vs Gandalf

I am just winding down (well as much as I can, haha) from my Harry Potter high since the 7th movie was just released a few weeks ago, and usually around this time of the year I am getting pumped about my annual Lord of the Rings marathon. Because of this, a thought occurred to me and now I need your input. Yes, you, all you fantasy geeks like me who have read/watched both series.

DISCUSSION QUESTION:
Who would win in an epic wizard battle? Gandalf or Dumbledore?
STATE YOUR CASE!

I know this has been over and over, but I am interested to see what my readers have to say on the subject. Let's base this debate on the books for the most part, but if you have only seen the movies, that's ok, too. I just really want to see where this goes. So make your cases, pick your sides, and tell me what you think and why!

READY, SET, COMMENT AND DISCUSS!

  1. I have to give my 2 cents here since this discussion has to do with 2 of my favorite movies! If you're voting on favoritism, my vote is for DD all the way! I love him and there is just so much more to his character than Gandolf. However, if they were to fight, it would be an epic battle. I think Gandolf would win in the end though. Largely because of this..."until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruins upon the mountainside." One of THE best lines...ever!!

  2. Are you kidding me? Dumbledore would kick ass. I mean, he's fucking Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. His name alone would be enough to melt Gandalf's brain. And that's when Dumbles would come and work his ridiculously powerful magic on Gandalf. But the real question is why they would be dueling. I mean, Dumbledore wouldn't duel someone just because someone challenged him as the greatest sorcerer of all time. So is Gandalf now the new Voldemort? In that case, Dumbledore would feed Gandalf his own ass with his epic wizarding skills. BAM!

  4. I'm a bigger fan of Dumbledore because, well, he's badass. But I can't really see him killing anyone and I know Gandalf would have no trouble just sending a fucking icicle at his torso, thats just how he rolls.

    Cool discussion!

    Btw, I "liked" you. :D

  5. I don't have much time to go into detail as I am at work, but a quick thought. Although I love them both, and especially DD since there is so much depth to his character that I connect with and love, I really think Gandalf would win. He's just so much of a badass. He lived in freaking Middle Earth. That's so much more extreme than living in modern times in England. But, DD would have a lot of fight in him and would probably surprise Gandalf. Now I'm second-guessing myself. DD might be a bit quicker and have some tricks up his sleeve. So who knows. Maybe he would win. Ugh, I'm terrible at this.

  6. As someone who knows a lot about LOTR and Harry Potter, I have to say that Gandalf would wipe the floor with Dumbledore. I say this because one thing that the movies do not really go into about Gandlaf is the fact that he is not even human. He, like Sauron, Sauruman & The Balrog, is what is called a Maia, which is a type of angelic being in Tolkien's world. The reason Gandalf does not use a lot a flashy magic is because he was forbidden from doing so by the beings that sent him to Middle-Earth. He was only supposed to act as inspiration and support against Sauron not oppose him directly. If he did not have that restriction he would be much more powerful than he appeared to be.

  8. I second devjannz. There's no contest. If it came to it, Gandalf would win - you've only got to look at which one of them actually stays dead. But why would they fight? They're on the same side.

  9. Points to devjannz! Gandy survived death already and fights Balrogs and Nazgul... that's a pretty big advantage, no matter HOW amazing DD truly is... HP fans, got anything to rebuttle with!?

  10. Interesting you should choose this 'Match-Up'....

Sir Ian McKellen was offered the part of Dumbledore before it was offered to Sir Richard Harris, but turned it down because, in his own words, "I'm already portaying one Legend, without having to worry about another portraying another one"

Ironically, he went on to portray another Legend of sorts....Magneto in the 'X-Men' Movies

  11. When you consider both characters and the reasons why they are both at war in their worlds and why they are actually fighting I don't think they would ever battle each other. Both characters have faced temptation from evil and know the consequences if they used their power for selfish acts of greed and hatred. Because they know that fine line that sends the greatest of men to destruction it has earned them an insurmountable amount of wisdom, humility, and a respect for the earth and everything that lives upon it...even hope for the things that have turned astray. Such great men would never fight each other and even if they were on different sides (which would never be the case but let our imaginations run away from us for a moment) I think they would do everything in their power to create peace before creating destruction and I know they would never reach that point. Make love not war and I know that is exactly what they would do.

  12. Haha, I am not talking about WOULD they ever fight. If they HAD to... WHO is more powerful. Of course neither of these good guys would battle for no reason, but that's not the issue. Who is most powerful, who has the most potential to beat the other?

  13. Gandalf all the way. I love Dumbledore, but let's face it, Gandalf is a demi-god who can't be killed even by a Balrog or the Witchking (though the latter comes close). As has been pointed out before, Dumbledore is very powerful and a great duelist, but no wand means no magic for him, whereas Gandalf's very fingertips course with magic in his blood. As has also been stated, the reason it seems like Gandalf doesn't cast a ton of spells is because he was forbidden to do so, he's meant to be a guide, an inspiration for the likes of Aragorn, the Hobbits, and help the men of Middle Earth rise up. If the guy can knock the Balrog off a bridge, kick it's ass while free falling in a tunnel in a cave, climb up a mountain and fight with the Balrog for days, maybe weeks, only to die then come back to life as a more powerful version of himself, that's pretty fucking ridiculous. Gandalf is not afraid to end someone if they are a threat. He can break Saruman's staff just by saying "Your staff is broken.". I think by the end of ROTK, he was simply killing peeps with his awesome. Sorry Dumbledore, but wizard lightning wands don't hold a candle to an immortal demi-God who can kill you with his awesome. Or a huge firebolt.

  14. I'd say Gandalf would win. Not that I've anything against Dumbledore, but we see Gandalf take on a balrog and Saurmon...

  15. As much as I love Dumbledore, I think Gandalf would win, because he's not human, he's an immensely powerful Maiar (I hope I spelled that correctly) spirit.

I love both of these characters, and I think if they actually met, rather than fighting, they would invite each other out for coffee. ;)

  16. Gandalf is more than merely a wizard - he's a Maia. He was around when the world was sung into existence. He's a tired-looking old man who doesn't do a whole lot of magic because of the limitations put on him by the ones who sent him to Middle-earth to help defeat Sauron.

Dumbledore is a fantastic wizard, but I'm afraid Gandalf is the more powerful. Not that the two would ever fight each other - they're both on the side of Good and Light, after all...

  17. "I think by the end of ROTK, he was simply killing peeps with his awesome." Maybe my favorite comment so far...

And Kevin, the Witch King didn't almost kill him in the book. The movie just made Gandalf look like a quivering mess because OMG STUPID.

  18. Gandalf would win. I believe he is more powerful because he has been around much longer and experienced a lot more. Not saying he is better wizard than Dumbledore though. I love them both. I picture them sitting down for a chat and a drink instead of battling though

  19. I just had an image of the two of them laughing in a Middle Earth-y pub over beers, with Michael Gambon and Ian McKellan playing them of course. It. Was. AWESOME.

  20. Sounds GREAT. Let's make that happen.

  21. Dumbledore is immortal. He is so powerful among humans, but his powers can't be compared with some one who essentially is an immortal god.

  22. Yeah. That's what I mean. If they had to they wouldn't. That's just my opinion though.

  23. I believe Gandalf would win as he is actually a Maiar, while Dumbledore is human. Gandalf has lived far longer too to learn more wisdom and magic.

  24. This is LOTR re-reading season for me too! Also, totally agree with devjanz, Gandalf would win, as much as I hate to admit it, haha.

  25. Hmm, well, with the overwhelming support shown for my good friend Gandy, it seems I needn't say a word.
Thanks, Audree! Excellent discussion topic, and excellent comments regarding it! You have a very intelligent and well-read audience. Keep up the good work!

  26. Thanks Brandon! You're awesome!

I'm surprised the HP fans aren't swooping into to defend. There has to be something DD can do!

  27. I guess people are being more objective on this. They realize that, as I said before, Gandalf kills people just with his awesome.

  28. Regardless of if it fit the bill of your query or not, I want to bandwagon onto Rocky's answer 100%.

  29. actually, i think dumbledore would win because he knows more practical spells and you guys said it yourselves gandalf is forbidden to use his magic to his full abilities. so dumbledore would win in the end. you gave me the evidence for my argument to end yours. and to those ppl who said well dumbledore actually dies and stays dead, he did that by choice, gandalf did not. hope my input into this discussion has upped the anti...so to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would vote for Dumbledore winning but honestly, since they are both "white" wizards, i do not see them killing each other.

They may have a go at it but eventually I think dd would introduce butterbeer to gandalf and he would be bringing out dwarf spirits and lots of singing would commence.

  31. mmmmm darth vader or lord sirius

  32. Gandalf of course.
Not only is he a God with the experience and knowledge of centuries (being older than the world itself) he has also come back from the dead even more powerful than before.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Gandolf is a Maiar and he arose from the dead. Although i cant see them fighting... Gandolf is better than Dumbledore in so many ways. Also to be honest Gandolf is the best!!!!

Fo Sho Gandalf. I've read both series, face it the facts. The reason why Gandalf wasn't able to use his full power because his master (The master of Maiars) didn't let him to. Gandalf could easily whoop Sauron's ass with his eyes closed if he was allowed to. But Gandalf is the kind of guy who has to lead and not fight. He still has power (HE KILLED A FRICKING BALROG), just not his full power. Trust me, if Gandalf told his master that he had to fight DD, well let's just say this. In the old days of LOTR (Silimarion), Elves could take 3 FRICKIN BALROGS at once. I am not joking. I want to see DD beat 1 balrog. I really want too. Overall, Gandalf will whoop DD ass, and use his body to bitch slap Harry Potter.

But to be honest, why would they be fighting. I can easily imagine them 2 sitting at "The Prancing Pony" or the "Leaking Caldron" drinking mead or tea.

  35. "Gandalf will whoop DD ass, and use his body to bitch slap Harry Potter."

    BAHAHAHA. BUT WHY?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, for one, remember Dumbledore can become invisible. Voldemort is the 2nd most powerful wizard in the HP universe, and Dumbledore was fighting him without even trying. Just remember how the death eaters reacted when he showed up in the Ministry.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anon, remember how Dumbledore reacts to death. He stays that way. Gandalf doesn't. Who do you think wins? Just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Another fact is Gandalf is much much older therefore more powerful. Also Easily older than the powerful deceased Gryffendor.

    ReplyDelete
  39. They are both truly amazing. You got DD with his wand and Gandalf with staff. But if they actully go on a huge real fight (for some strange unknown reason) Gandalf will probably win. He's just stronger than DD.
